Sessions
During a normal session we do a standard bow in and warm up. This includes stretching, breathwork and cardio. Then we break down the class either into grades or we all join in together.
For new starters - we always offer one on one teaching for a few lessons to help settle in.
We go over the 3 inseparable fundamental pillars of karate: Kion (basics), Kata (form) and Kumite (sparring).
Although some of our higher grades and kids like to compete from time to time, we are not a competing only club. We train hard and do good karate.
All our Instructors are DBS checked and First Aid trained.
Everything you need to know
What to wear:
For the first few sessions, until you decide you want to join as a member, you can come wearing clean, comfortable workout clothing. This includes leggings, sweats, t-shirts etc.
Shoes and socks will be asked to be removed as we train bare footed.
What to bring:
Please always bring water with you.
Community:
Class sizes depend on the day. We usually expect 6-13 members, and our 15 members in our childrens classes.
Gradings:
We usually have in-house gradings up to 3 times a year. This is the chance for you to show off what you have learnt and be moved onto the next level. Chief Instructor Rangan Ravindran 5th Dan will tell you when you are eligible to grade. Black belt gradings take place elsewhere run by the HDKI.
The HDKI is our organisation that we train under. Insurance will be needed to be taken out by you within 1 month of training to be allowed to continue for health and safety purposes.

Alice
Alice first started karate as a teenager in 2001. Alice quickly found her love for the shotokan style and discipline. Gaining all of her kyu grade belts by the time she was 18. Unfortunately failing her Shodan grading at 19 and life getting in the way meant that she took a 13 year break from karate till the age of 32. That was when Alice found Kanshin karate club in Jan 2021 and started training again towards 1st Dan and passed in April 2023. She is currently working towards her 2nd Dan. Alice partakes in numerous workshops and enjoys the odd competition.
Alice also trains in Krav Maga and is a P2 level.
Guest Instructors
We also often have guest Instructors come and teach our classes. A regular is Sensei Neil Jerome 6th Dan, founder of Kanshin Karate.
