Spectrum to get much needed roof and steelwork maintenance
Guildford Spectrum, operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Guildford Borough Council is to undergo essential maintenance works to repair and over roof parts of the roof while carrying out the final phase of repairs to the steelwork within the pools area. It is hoped these works will significantly reduce water ingress to the building.
Freedom Leisure can confirm that while the majority of the work to the centre’s roof will result in no closure of facilities, there will be a necessary period of pool closures, in order to complete the required remedial works to the steelwork within the pool halls’. However, at least one swimming pool will be available throughout the works.
The dates have been planned specifically to reduce disruption, with the 25 metre pool, teaching pool and diving pool to be closed from 7 August to 3 September, during the school holidays, to minimise impact on lessons and at a time when swimming participation naturally drops due to the summer. The Leisure Pool will be open throughout this period. In addition it is a time when Freedom Leisure’s second Guildford based pool, Guildford Lido can best accommodate swimmers, as of course the weather is warmer.
Spectrum’s Leisure Pool will then be closed post school holidays from 4 September and will re-open from 20 October, in readiness for October Half Term. The 25 metre pool, teaching pool and dive pool will be open throughout this period. Please note due to ongoing maintenance the 3m and 5m Diving boards are unavailable until further notice; therefore it is only the 1m board available during Swim For All sessions from 4th September onwards.
Steve May, Freedom Leisure Area Manager, says: “Guildford Borough Council has carefully selected these dates to minimise the impact to our business and our customers. However, there will of course be some disruption for which we apologise in advance. However, we ask that our customers bear with us while this much-needed work is carried out in order to safe-guard the future of the facility.”
Steve May adds: “We operate these facilities on behalf of, and in partnership with, Guildford Borough Council and are hugely grateful for the investment they are making in this popular centre. Guildford Spectrum is one of the largest leisure complexes in the UK and not only services the community but brings a huge number of visitors to the area, it is a wonderful asset for the region.”

Maintenance and Repair Works taking place as follows;
Maintenance and repair works are due to be undertaken over the next six months. These works are primarily part of the Council’s maintenance programme on the fabric of the building.
Tower loading scaffolds will shortly be installed at various points around the outside of the building plus a site compound at the back of the venue. This final stage of roof maintenance work will be complete in December 2017.
In August the final phase of steelwork repair will start in the Pools Hall. Works have been planned to minimise customer disruption, however these works will require some selective closures of the swimming facilities. All the works in the Pool Hall are programmed to be complete before October Half Term. There will also be some enhancements to the plant in this area.
Guildford Borough Council have worked closely with the operator, Freedom Leisure, to ensure clubs, schools and regular users are informed. Freedom Leisure is also taking the opportunity during these closures to undertake necessary works that fall under their responsibility such as the replacement of the diving pool staircase.
As part of the maintenance works, some internal scaffolding will be necessary in the corridors to enable access to hard to reach areas to further reduce water ingress into the building. This scaffolding should not impact on the customers’ ability to use the facilities.
This maintenance work had been planned to ensure the venue continues to be a place where customers can enjoy a variety of exciting leisure and sporting opportunities.
