Guildford Spectrum's Swim School follows the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) which takes swimmers on a journey, from their first splash at 6 months old to developing confidence and competence in the water. The Spectrum Swim School aims to:

  • Offer classes to a wide range of abilities and ages
  • Offer high standards of tuition in water confidence, swimming techniques and aquatic skills
  • Maintain an educational, fun and safe swimming environment

All our teaching staff are ASA Qualified and have a wealth of experience in the provision of swimming teaching. Lessons at each stage are supported by an assistant teacher to aid progression.

Fundamental Movement Programme

Lessons are programmed after school on most weekdays and Saturday mornings. 

 Monday to Friday:          
 Stage 1  4.00pm
 Stage 2  4.30pm
 Stage 3  5.00pm
 Stage 4  5.30pm
 Stage 5+  4.30pm onwards - held in the Competition Pool    
 Saturdays:  
 Stages 1 - 7  8.00am - 12noon

Fundamental Movement Skills

Swimmers develop the core range of skills required to be confident, competent and safe in the water through stages 1-7. These sessions do not require an adult to accompany the child.

Stage  

Teaching Pool: 30 minute classes 
 1 For non swimmers confident in the water without an adult. Develop basic safety awareness the 'class' scenario, basic movement and water confidence skills. Swimming aids such as arm bands and floats may be used.  
 2 Also for non-swimmers, the aim is to develop safe entries to the water, including jumping in, basic floating, travelling front & back up to a distance of 5 metres, plus rotation to regain upright positions. Stages 1&2 may be completed within the same class.  
 3 Aims to progress safe water entry and rotation skills, develop swimming up to 10 metres on front and back and introduce submersion and the Water Safety Code.

Suitable for improving swimmers who are confident in a larger pool. Aims to develop an understanding of buoyancy through a range of skills, refining kicking techniques for all strokes and swimming 10 metres to the required ASA standard. 
Stage  Competition Pool: 30 minute classes
 5 Introduces more technical skills such as sculling, treading water and complete rotation. Swimmers will perform all strokes for a distance of 10 metres to the required ASA standard. 
 6 Suitable for stronger swimmers confident in deep water, this stage continues to develop strokes to the required ASA standard focusing particulary on breathing techniques and taking one stroke to a distance of 25 metres. 
 7 For advanced swimmers, this stage focuses on developing quality stroke techniques up to 100 metres and aims to succesfully complete an obsticle course that combines a varity of skills accomplished throughout stages 1-6.

Children should not go into the water until the teacher allows them to. Parents are responsible for their children before and after their lesson. All children must leave the pools after their lessons.

Advanced Development

These 45/60-minute sessions allow children to build upon the core range of skills developed through Stages 1-7 in a wide range of aquatic disciplines.  The Swim School currently offers Stages 8, 9 & 10 in Competitive Swimming though our Junior Swim Squad sessions.  View our swim development programme.  

Booking Information

Bookings for new customers for 2012 Courses can be made as follows:

1) By calling 01483 443322 and selecting option 4 for bookings and then option 2 for courses.

Customer Services opening hours are;  Monday to Thursday 9.00am - 6.30pm, Friday 9.00am - 6.00pm, Saturday 9.00am - 1.00pm and Sundays closed.

2) Waiting lists for courses that are currently full are open for customers to leave contact details for future enrolment.

The following payment options are available:

Cheque  (payable to Freedom Leisure) By post or in person 
Maestro/Mastercard/Visa/Visa Delta  By phone, post or in person 

We regret that reservations are not possible and bookings can only be made with payment.  (For postal bookings, please confirm charges by telephone as cheques for incorrect amounts will be returned without the booking made).

Spread the cost
Swimmers/parents will be able to spread the cost of their lessons by choosing to pay by direct debit.  The monthly payment is based on 46 weeks and is made up of 11 equal payments between September 2011 and July 2012, followed by a small payment in August to maintain the continuous nature of the direct debit payment.

Upfront Discount - there is also an option to make an Up Front payment for the whole 46-week period.  There is a discount equivalent to 4 free lessons if this payment option is selected and paid for by 1st September 2011.

46 Week Programme
The Swim School now operates over 46 weeks of the year.  This period will commence on 1st September 2011 and run through until 31st July 2012.  Within this period there will be a 2 week break at Christmas (w/c 19th December and 26th December 2011)  and lessons will not operate on any bank holiday dates.  The Swim School will not operate throughout August 2012.

Continual Assessment
From September 2011 swimmers will undertake continual assessment against the criteria set out within the stages of the ASA National Plan.  Once a swimmer has demonstrated a satisfactory level of competency in all elements of the criteria then they will be recommended to progress to the next stage within the programme (this will be facilitated subject to the availability of suitable space).

Free Leisure Pool Swimming
Swimmers paying for their lessons either by monthly direct debit or up front payment options will gain Swim School Membership.  A benefit of this membership includes FREE* Swimming.
