Guildford Lido opens 1 May - 80th season

lido1 Guildford Lido will open for its 80th season on Wednesday 1 May (May Day).

The Lido which is managed by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Guildford Borough Council was first opened on 21st June 1933 by the then Mayor of Guildford, Cllr. William Harvey and a record 8000 people flocked to the Lido on its opening day.

Guildford Lido, set in four acres of rolling lawns and landscaped gardens regularly welcomes over 50,000 swimmers during the season who enjoy the crystal clear waters of the heated outdoor Olympic size pool with the water at a pleasant 24 degrees (weather permitting) and is one of the few surviving 1930’s outdoor pools in the UK.

Swimmers can enjoy a varied programme including Early Morning Swims, Evening Adult Swims and Public Sessions. For the best value our season tickets are a good option. The Lido is also the ideal venue for corporate events and parties.

Ice Rink Maintenance; 3rd - 18th June
ice_repaint

The traditional ice rink maintenance programme at Guildford Spectrum will be taking place from Monday 3 June (4pm) until 18 June 2013.

The ice rink will be closed during the works which happens every 3-4 years at the complex. The maintenance work will begin with the ice refrigeration unit being turned off, just as you would to defrost your freezer at home. Staff will then “break up” the ice on the 1800m2 ice pad using a combination of the two Ice Resurfacers (Zamboni) and brute force!

The ice will then be taken away exposing the solid concrete ice pad. Whilst the staff are working away upstairs, contractors will be installing a new refrigeration unit downstairs to improve the efficiency of the plant and equipment that freezes the rink 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Once the contractors have completed their installation they will turn on the ice plant to begin the freeze process and get the pad to around about -10 degrees. Freedom Leisure staff will then spray a fine spray of water onto the pad which freezes. Once they have achieved a 2 -3 mm thick layer of ice the paint brushes come out and the repainting of the pad can begin.

The easy bit to paint is the pad itself which is just white however more care and attention is paid to painting the lines for Ice Hockey and also the sponsor logos and other graphics in the ice.

Freedom Leisure Area Manager Steve May commented on the works; “We are very lucky that we have a team of dedicated and skilled staff who can carry out this work. It is regrettable that the rink has to close during the works but it is essential that we replace the ice to maintain the consistently good quality ice that we have here at Spectrum.”

The rink will reopen at 12noon on 18th June. Freedom Leisure is launching a competition through its Facebook page to provide an opportunity for two lucky skaters to be the first to skate on the new ice at 12 noon on 18th June. For more information visit www.facebook.com/GuildfordSpectrum.
