Free activity event for children |
|
Spectrum's popular Junior Summer Fitness Challenge (JSFC) launches with a free activity event for all children between the ages of 4 -14 years at the athletics track on Sunday July 5 at 11am. The award-winning scheme, which is sponsored by South West Trains, aims to keep kids fit and active throughout their summer holidays by motivating them to do more physical activity.
Children taking part in the scheme are encouraged to complete thirty physical activities over their summer break. Each participating child receives a free Fitness Pack and personal Fitness Diary and, for every 10 activities they complete, they collect a free reward at Spectrum. If they finish the whole challenge they collect a medal and certificate. The activities can be chosen by the child so anything that raises their heart rate for thrity minutes counts, whether it's walking, bike riding, playing football or enjoying some of the facilities at Spectrum.
This summer the complex is also teaming up with Surrey librairies to encourage children to complete the Quest Seekers Reading Challenge in addition to the JSFC. Children who manage to read six books over the summer and complete the Fitness Challenge receive an extra reward of a skating ticket and a free Gulldford Library DVD loan.
For further information about the launch event call 01483 443335. For further information about the Quest Seekers Reading Challenge call 0300 2 001001.

Guildford Spectrum's Charities of the Year - Cherry Trees and Home-Start Guildford are joining forces to raise funds for local children with a new 'Swim for the Children' event at Spectrum on Saturday 5 September, 5.30pm - 7.30pm. Sponsored by Procter and Gamble (P&G), the event is open to all ages and aims to raise money to support the work that the charities do with families in the community.
Clandon based Cherry Trees offers short term respite care for children and young people with physical or learning difficulties. The home-style environment supports many local familiies who would otherwise struggle to get a break. Home-Start Guildford also support local families by providing volunteers who give practical and emotional support to help build families' confidence and ability to cope.
Spectrum supports both charities with its Active Gifts scheme, which converts points that customers have donated from their Active Cards into leisure activity tickets. To date 81,000 points have been donated, enabling children from both Cherry Trees and Home-Start families to visit the complex.

After a two week closure involving 1,100 litres of white paint, gallons of water and over 266 hours of work Spectrum Ice re-opened on Friday 19th June at 6pm. Spectrum Ice, home to the Guildford Flames Ice Hockey team, has been completely re-surfaced and re-painted and now features the brand new logo of the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM). The Guildford based company, which is a world leader in music industry education, has developed a new partnership with the leisure complex as both have a goal of providing the very best in leisure activites for local young people.
The ice re-paint needs to be undertaken every three years as a typical 960,000 skaters will use it during this time! Alan Hankin, Spectrum's Ice Manager who lead the team doing the re-surfacing says, "Making an ice rink isn't as simple as flooding the floor with gallons of water. The crew must apply the water carefully and slowly, in order to ensure ideal thickness. An ice surface that is too thick requires more energy to keep frozen and is prone to getting soft on top. A surface that is too thin is also dangerous because skaters risk cutting straight through the ice."
"Luckily we have a fantastic team here who worked around the clock, often overnight, to ensure the work was completed to a very high standard. I'm very proud of their efforts and hope that our skaters will enjoy the newly refurbished ice."
To celebrate the ice refurbishment and their new joint partnership Spectrum and the ACM will be hosting a very special Live Bands Night on Saturday 18th July at the Ice Xtreme disco from 8.30pm until 11.00pm. To book tickets call 01483 443322.
